Volbracht 408; Stafleu 1207; Nissen 395. - A fine copy of this most important British iconography of fungi. Mordechai Cubitt Cooke (1825 - 1914) was a self-taught naturalist and became the leading British mycologist after J. Berkeley. His "Illustrations" remained for half a century the mycological work with the highest number of plates - surpassed then by Bresadola's Iconographia mycologica (1927-1933). The illustrations with coloured background were taken from nature by Cooke himself or copied from drawings by Berkeley, Broome, W. G. Smith or Massee. Here and here light browning on text-pages. Nice black half-leather, edges gilt, with gilt titles on spine. 21,5 cm
