Folio
2 volumes in 4. p (i-iii), iv-xvi, (1)-368, (i)-ix, (table); (i-iii), (369)-540, (i-iii), 541-700, (1, errata): 397 mostly col. printed plates
(Herbier de la France, seconde division).
Volbracht 300 & 303; Stafleu 908-9; Gilbert p 61-64; Nissen 296; Uellner 230; Krieger p 36; Pfister p 30. - The first time we can offer a complete copy of this exeedingly rare edition of this master work of pre-friesian mycology with all the 397 plates and the "unfindable" last part of text!

Pierre Bulliard (1752-1793) died at the age of 41, when he had completed the printing of all the 602 plates of his Herbier of plantes and fungi and the most part of text. The botanist E. P. Ventenat completed the text for the Champignons, using Bulliards notes and adding new title pages to the already printed parts. The second volume of text is exceedingly rare, as nearly all the original copies were destroyed by fire shortly after printing. Also, plates 601 and 602 are mostly lacking.

The work is the first with colour printed plates of fungi. Bulliard had developed his own printing method for coloured copper-engravings. He drew and engraved the plates and mixed the inks. Then, he superimposed tint plates with the individual tones necessary to print separately the blue, red and yellow of each image. All the plates have tiny holes in the corners to fix paper with needles for sequential printing. .

The 393 fungi-plates of the work are numbered between 1 and 602, as they have been published in alternation with the plant-plates. 4 more plates with microscopic details and explanation of genera are in the text-volume and here inserted from another, slightly smaller copy.

Our copy from the collection of a French mycologist is througout somewhat foxed and spotted. Vol. 2:2 has light waterstain, affecting the margins of first pages and last plates. Bound in 19th century quarter-leather with raised bands and gilt compartments and titles on spine. Edges gilt. Margins of two covers worn, binding of vol. 4 restaured. In all, still a good copy of the exceedingly rare work. Folio. 32 x 24 cm
