It was founded in 1936 as "Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Mykologischen Gesellschaft" and renamed Österreichische Zeitschrift für Pilzkunde in 1938. After the annection of Austria by the German Reich, the Nazi-authorities orded in 1939 a new change of the title and the society was incorporated in the Deutsche Mykologische Gesellschaft (the announcements here in Volume 1). Well-known contributors are Julius Schäffer and Heinrich Lohwag. Kurt Lohwag reports on use of fungi during the second world war: "Reiches Hallimasch-Vorkommen an der Ostfront".
