p (i), (i)-lv, (1)-138, (1): 48 hand-coloured lith. plates.
Volbracht 59; Stafleu 309; Uellner 50; Stiftung für Botanik 27; Nissen 77; Trimbach: Barla et la mycologie. In: Annales du Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Nice, Tome XI, 1996. -Very rare first issue, one of 50 copies with all the lithographed plates hand-colored and in the best binding in chagrin-leather. Only 50 copies of this issue were produced, followed by 230 more copies with mostly chromolithographed plates (cf. the extensive study by Trimbach). The plates were drawn by Barla, lithographed by Fossat and Vivaldi and printed by Davin in Nice. They have been finely hand-couloured by the Italian colorist Guiseppe V. Calabresi. Later editions were chromolithographed by Carlin frères in Nice. The text is printed on heavy paper.
Barlas iconography on the fungi of southern France is his first book on fungi and much rarer than his later "Flore mycologique illustrée. Les champignons des Alpes-Maritimes". The author was co-founder and director of the Museum d'Histoire naturelle de Nice, famous for his works on fungi and orchids. This copy is inscribed "a Madame Betzy Rimmel. Homage de mon père. Philippine Barla. Nice, le 11 Mai 1863". Fine condition, very slight, hardly noticeable waterstaining at the lower margin of some plates. Original binding in chagrin-leather with blind embossed, gilt title-band on cover. (Chagrin is leather made from the back of horses, camels, donkey or mules. The main characteristic of this leather is the artificial grain - https://www.leather-dictionary.com/index.php/Chagrin_leather). Oblong-Folio. 26 x 35,5 cm
