He was born as a member of the Moravian Herrnhuther-community in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania) and published the book at the age of 25, when his family lived in Germany, where he was as a teacher at the college of Niesky. Later Schweinitz became the founder of Mycology in America, publishing Synopsis fungorum Carolinae in 1822 and Synopsis fungorum in America boreali media degentium in 1832. His coauthor Johann Baptist Albertini (1769-1831) was a clergyman and later a bishop of the Moravian church, a minister and botanist.
The work proposes for the first time the spore colour as a taxonomical character. 1130 species are described, 127 presented as new, 93 depicted on the finely engraved and coloured plates. The copy is from the library of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, with their stamp on title. Text very slightly spotted, plates in fine colouring, some corners slightly soiled from dust.
