Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli (1658-1730) was an Italian soldier and naturalist from Bologna, well known too for his studies on the oceans and the Danube-river. Giovanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720) was a physician and anatomist from Rome, who described the spread of Malaria by mosquitoes. In this work, the authors uphold the opinion prevailing since the Greeks that fungi are a product of decaying plants, the mycelium being an intermediate state between corruption and the fungal fruit-body. Several plates show truffles and other fungi and how they grow in the ground. At the beginning of the volume is bound the announcement of Marsiglis great work on the Danube-river, published in 1700, 60 pages, with two nice vignettes. Very nice copy, only few spotting, bound in old half-calf, back richly gilt. 38 cm
