Volbracht 316; Pritzel 1407; Burdet 408 (miss. 1 pl); BM (NH) 294. - Very rare early work with an important mycological part. Johann Christian Buxbaum (1693-1730), was a German physician, botanist and traveller. Tsar Peter the Great engaged him as a botanist in St. Petersburg. From there Buxbaum went with Count Romanzoff to Constatinopolis and studied plants and fungi of Asia minor and the Caucasus from 1724 to 1727. He died at the age of 36, and the parts 4 and 5 of this work have been published posthumously by Johann Georg Gmelin. More than 40 species of fungi are described and pictured in parts 1, 2, 4 and 5. The work has 293 partly folded plates, with a rather confusing numbering In part 4 and 5, up to three plates ("Tab.") are printed together on one leaf; part 5 has an appendix with 44 figures on 20 leaves. Copies of the work vary slightly.
In this copy, 4 of the 293 plates or leaves are missing and were inserted in fine facsimile copies on old paper. The title of part 1 is a bit soiled and repaired in margins, there is a brownish spot in the middle of first leaves. Plates 10-11 and 72-74 in part 3 have tears in margins, plate 26 of this part is missing. Also missing and replaced: plates 30, 39 fig 2 and last plate of appendix with figs 41 - 44. Here and there a bit browned or spotted, but a good copy. Contemporary leather (rebacked) with gilt label, lower corners of binding worn. 4o. 26,5 cm
